Tsarevets Fortress

Tsarevets Hill, Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria - 2022 Danube River cruise. Tsarevets Hill overlooks Veliko Tarnovo and is the 12th-century remains of the castle and church once occupied by Bulgarian kings. At the top of Tsarevets Hill is Ascension Cathedral. This medieval fortress served as the Second Bulgarian Empire’s primary fortress and strongest bulwark between 1185 and 1393, housing the royal and the patriarchal palaces. In 1393 the Ottomans conquered the fortress and destroyed it.
